W23 A white “Blank” on Swastikas’ background vase, Daoguang

COD: W23 Categoria:

Descrizione

Description:   A Chinese baluster vase covered with a glossy, thick white glaze. It has 6 reserves left blank on a deeply carved Swastikas background. It is a vase that was meant to be decorated with overglaze polychrome enamels, but for some unknown reasons it has been left blank. We have found three examples of similar vases, all them dated from the late Qianlong / Daoguang period. On all them, the swastikas pattern was gold gilded, as seen in the example shown here as reference. We had the possibility to handle one of them, which was of superb quality, marked Daoguang and most probably Imperial. The quality of the glaze of this vase is outstanding. Glossy, thick, unctous, and enhanced by the deep carving of the swastika pattern, as seen in the last three pictures of the vase.

Dating:  Daoguang period.

Size:  43.4 cm high

Provenance:  Antiquarian market

References:  See in the last picture a similar vase, which shows what this one should look like, if finished.

Notes:  The vase has a firing fault at the rim. It is possible that, as the vase of Imperial quality that we have handled, this vase too was meant for the Court, hence not finished with the final enameling just because of the firing fault. On the other hand, it not went to the trash pile just because of its quality. At our personal taste, it is a pity not having the reserves decorated, but we prefer the swastikas pattern left blank than gilded.
