Descrizione
Description: Chinese Cizhou jar of the Ming dynasty, decorated with brown and yellow washes, with a freely drawn wild goose flying among clouds. On the back, a probably water plant with the same colors. What is distinctive of this jar is the particular purplish color of the background glaze.
Dating: Ming period, 16th century.
Size: 25.5 cm high
Provenance: Antiquarian market
References: Of these rare jars, an identical one is in the collection of the Chinese Museum of Parma (what a coincidence, at only 50 km from here). It has been commented by Prof. Ye Zhemin, see the first picture of the References. Another one is in the Kempe collection, see the second image of the References. A jar of this type with different subject (third References picture) is in the British Museum and another one in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, (fourth picture). The one at the BM seems strangely dated to the Qing dynasty. But a definitive, very interesting study, made by Ching-Ling Wang, Curator of the Rijksmuseum, with the proper dating is illustrated in the last three pictures.
