B11 A very rare Cizhou “Cadogan” peach shaped wine pot, Song/Ming Dynasty

COD: B11 Categoria:

Descrizione

Description:   Chinese very rare Cadogan Cizhou wine pot, Song style, shaped as a peach.

Dating: The dating of this wine pot is absolutely difficult because of lack of references (see References here below). It has a definite Song looking, and for sure it is an ancient one, but at the beginning of our searches an expert told us that no peach-shaped Cadogans before Ming are known. That revealed to be not true, as Song wine pots of Cadogan type exist, as seen in the first two pictures of the References. We have also found the Cadogan wine pot shown in the last picture, of Cizhou type and peach shape, but its dating, according to the description, is not reliable; so we can’t take it for being surely of the Song period. Thus, we would prudently date our wine pot as possibly Song Dynasty, but not later than Ming Dynasty.

Size:  10 cm high

Provenance:  Antiquarian market. The antiquarian bought this wine pot and the very rare Liao wine pot one (see E12 in the Early Pottery section) from a collector in Pescara.

References:  See in last pictures two oil spot Cadogan wine pots of the Song / Jin period. One sold by Sotheby’s and the other one from the ex Shatzman Collection, now in the Ackland Art Museum. See also the only Cadogan Cizhou type teapot found. It is from an internet site, reporting that it was auctioned by Bonhams Sidney on November 20th, 2011. But it is not available on Bonham’s site. The description is strange: “17th century style, possibly Song dynasty”, which make it a not sure reference.

Notes: “Cadogan” is the name given to this type of wine pots, that thanks to a particular structure are filled from the inside and are then lidless. See the last picture of the wine pot, where its inner structure is drawn in red. It is worth to note that some are calling these “Cadogan” vessels as “teapots”. This sounds strange because it is not possible to fill them with tea leaves, and even ess to remove them. So we stay with the wine pot name.
