Description: Chinese Cizhou jar of wide mouth, decorated with freely brushed peony leaves in dark brown on a milky glaze background. An auspicious inscription on the other side in freely grass script. We had a lot of difficulties for reading the inscription, until a friend with a great knowledge of Chinese writings sent us the picture where the inscription is better readable, having been handwritten by him. It translates like: “Your Fortune will be like East Sea with forever flowing water”.
Dating: The jar is early Yuan according to an expert friend, who commented his dating as follow: “I would tend to date this piece early in the Yuan – probably even Jin – for reason of the comparative simplicity of the free form design and the style of the sentiment in grass style calligraphy which to me suggests a heavy and near Song influence. To my mind this piece does not have the boldness we associate with mature Yuan pieces nor the sharp lines and flavor of Ming pieces; it seems almost “dreamy” and not distinctly decorative like other Cizhou pieces”.

References: No exact references of the shape of this jar have been found. Most probably the jar seen in the last picture, sold by Christie’s, is of the same shape, although the diameter of the base seems smaller but it could be matter of picture’s perspective. The size is close, the dating provided too. What is interesting is that thanks to that jar we can see the type of lid with which these jars were provided.
