Description: Chinese cameo agate snuff bottle, carved in relief with a Scholar and his disciple, rocks, and a pine tree. The carver cleverly exploited the dark and light parts of the stone, placing the rocks and the two figures in the dark part and the pine tree in the light part. Thanks to this, the resulting scene depicts the two figures inside a cave, looking out at the pine tree in sunlight.
Foot/base: Flat base with protruding narrow foot.

Stopper: Red agate stopper with metal collar and metal spoon.

Notes: We like to think that some of this bottle’s peculiarities could be related to the poem “Seeking the hermit but not finding him” by Jia Dao, well illustrated in the description of our inside-painted bottle I23. In particular: the cave, which can be associated with a hermit; the pine tree, which when seen from the cave recalls a mountainous landscape; and the fact that the young man is in front of the adult, behind him as a scholar and his disciple are usually depicted. It is as if the boy were explaining where the sought person could be.
