Which can be translated as “In the first ten days of the seventh month of the Xin-Si year (1881), I respectfully present this to my esteemed elder brother, Fu Qing, for his refined appreciation. — Xue Li, Cheng Men”. Cheng Men (c. 1833-c. 1908), is known for being the precursor, and considered as the main master, of Qianjiang painting on porcelain. Around 1871 he was hired by the Imperial Kiln to paint porcelain for the Tongzhi Emperor’s wedding. His works was already purchased and collected by the noble and literati classes of his time. Although he was good also in birds and flower paintings, his landscape paintings, which style is derived from the Yuan Dynasty, are the most outstanding among his works. Especially his landscape paintings are today in Museums and fetch high prices at auctions and at the Antique market (see the exceptional price reached by the reference plaque). Our plaque has a horizontal break at the top, which luckily is outside the decorated area. The glaze has the “wavy” surface typical of the period.
