Descrizione
Description: Chinese glass snuff bottle imitating a pebble of celadon and russet jade. Bottles of this type are rare because of the difficulty of imitating both the celadon and russet type jade in a single piece. Our example is particularly well succeeded as it can fool jade experts if it were not for the swirls at the small base.
Foot/base: Very small concave base
Mark: No marks
Dating: 18th century, probably Imperial, Palace Workshops, Beijing
Material: Glass.
Size: 52 mm long
Stopper: Coral branch with black glass collar and stained wood spoon
Provenance: Ex Carlo Cottarelli Collection, Milano, Italy. Bought directly from him.
References: In the last picture, a glass bottle imitating a russet jade pebble sold by Sotheby’s.
Notes: Chinese glass makers were masters in imitating other materials with glass. This is a perfect example. Jade experts judged this bottle as being authentic jade, which makes it a real masterpiece, like the bottle G8. At the minuscule concave base the typical swirls of blown glasses can be seen, revealing its true nature.
